Tips for Moving Your Treasured Artwork

Moving can be a stressful process, but when it comes to transporting valuable and fragile artwork, the stakes are even higher. Ensuring the safety and security of your prized pieces requires careful planning and a bit of knowledge. At DA Moving, we understand the importance of your artwork and are here to provide expert tips for moving these delicate treasures with care.

1. Assess and Inventory Your Collection

Before you start packing, take the time to assess and inventory your artwork. Document each piece with detailed notes on its condition, dimensions, and any special considerations.

2. Gather the Right Supplies

Proper packing materials are crucial for protecting your artwork. Here’s a list of supplies you’ll need:

  • Acid-Free Paper: To wrap and protect surfaces from scratches and smudges.
  • Bubble Wrap: For cushioning and absorbing shocks.
  • Corner Protectors: To shield frames from dents and dings.
  • Sturdy Boxes: Custom-sized boxes or crates, preferably double-walled, for added protection.
  • Packing Tape: High-quality tape to secure wrapping materials and boxes.
  • Climate-Controlled Containers: For valuable and sensitive pieces, consider using climate-controlled crates to protect against temperature and humidity changes.

3. Prepare Your Artwork for Packing

Different types of artwork require different packing methods:

  • Paintings on Canvas: If possible, remove the painting from its frame. Wrap it in acid-free paper, then bubble wrap. Place it in a sturdy, custom-sized box or crate, with additional bubble wrap or packing peanuts to prevent movement.
  • Framed Art: For framed pieces, cover the glass with painter’s tape in an “X” pattern to prevent it from shattering. Wrap the entire piece in acid-free paper, followed by bubble wrap. Use corner protectors before placing it in a box.

4. Label Your Boxes Clearly

Label each box with a description of its contents, the room it belongs in, and any handling instructions.

5. Plan the Move Carefully

Discuss the specifics of your move with your moving company. Ensure they have experience handling artwork and that they understand the importance of careful handling and transportation.

6. Unpacking and Placement

Once you arrive at your new location, unpack your artwork with the same care you took during packing. Inspect each piece for any potential damage and rehang or place them in their designated spots. It’s a good idea to re-evaluate the placement to ensure the artwork is displayed in a suitable environment with appropriate lighting and temperature control.

Moving expensive artwork involves careful planning and attention to detail, but with the right approach, you can ensure that your cherished pieces arrive at their new home in perfect condition.
